ON MERITOCRACY

The market is a kakistocracy and a kleptocracy. Many 'successful' people are those with the brass neck to cheat, steal and bamboozle those of us who are not unscrupulous enough or brave enough to do likewise. Many of the 'successful', moreover, were given a leg up - daddy's connections, inherited wealth and whatnot. This is a rentier economy of the mediocre, the mad and the bad. I'm reminded of Bolesław Prus's late 19th Century novel 'The Doll', set in Russian-dominated Poland, a society plagued by the inertia, greed and stupidity of its ruling class. I can't read it without thinking that a number of western countries, Britain included, are regressing quickly to the conditions described by Prus.
